University of Rijeka (UNIRI) - Croatia

uniriThe University of Rijeka is situated in the city of Rijeka. It is a state-funded university under the direct authority of the Ministry of Science, Education and Sport. The University of Rijeka was founded in 1973 and it has undergone a series of transformations which were for the most part the result of changes brought on by the national higher education policies. The University is actively engaged in international networking in the area of Education for Sustainability.
Today the University mission is dedicated to making strategic and development-oriented decisions on numerous issues regarding the functioning of the academic community and continued facilitation of international competitiveness in all areas of scientific, artistic and professional activities. Through active collaboration with the economic and business sector along with partnerships for community development the University endeavours to contribute toward the socio-cultural transition into a knowledge-based society.

Its vision targets the inclusion of the University of Rijeka within the top 500 European Universities, thus it has committed itself to dynamic development which systematically facilitates mobility and the development of research careers while providing each individual with an opportunity to express their talents and entrepreneurial energy.

The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences has undergone several reforms since its foundation. For twenty years it operated as a professional college of education and a teacher training college. In 1977, the Department/School of Industrial Education and teacher training faculties in Rijeka, Pula and Gospić merged to become part of the University of Rijeka as the Faculty of Education. In 1998, this Faculty adopted the name of the Facultyof Arts and Sciences. With the structural changes and separation of the university departments (of physics, informatics and mathematics, Faculty finally adopted the name of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in 2009. The mission of the Faculty is to provide excellence in education to students studying towards undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the fields of humanities, social sciences. In the 2005/2006 academic year, the Faculty started implementing the educational reform triggered by the Bologna Declaration. Currently, all first-year programs comply with the Bologna requirements (i.e. the ECTS). Single-major programs include Croatian Language and Literature, Psychology, Pedagogy, Cultural Studies, and Polytechnics., while double-major degrees include Croatian Language and Literature, German Language and Literature, English Language and Literature, Pedagogy, Philosophy, History, History of Art and Computer Science. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is involved in numerous national and international research and applied projects. It places special emphasis on conducting international collaborative projects, which secures its position in the international scientific community.

University's accounting system is completely within the organization and deals with, inputs and outputs management, the financial planning, forecasting, projects’ financial management etc. It has the experienced project management teams working on a number of different applications and projects’ conducts throughout the Universities’ departments and Faculties.

Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences is a part of International Network of Teacher Education Institutions Associated with the UNESCO Chair on Reorienting Teacher Education to Address Sustainability. As teacher education institution we are working on sustainable development issues through different programme courses (as Human Rights Education, Education for Democratic Citizenship, Civic Education, etc.), scientific researches on social responsibility of universities and role of higher education institutions in promotion of sustainable development and through scientific seminars and conferences (national and international) which cover also field of education for sustainable development.

Role of UNIRI in the project:

  • Coordinate the mapping exercise in Croatia and complete the template.
  • Assist in the development of an online platform of resources as well as get familiarised and review the online tool.
  • Translate project materials into the national language.
  • Contribute to the bi-annual newsletters.
  • Provide feedback to the Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) framework.
  • Contribute to the dissemination and exploitation of the project outputs, outcomes and future network activities.
  • Participate and actively contribute to the discussions generated in regional and annual meetings, seminars and conference.

Operational and financial management:

  • The project team will coordinate the above administrative and academic project activities.
  • Financial administration will be handled by project team who will liaise internally with the institution’s finance department.
